While Lady Gaga has been in the music scene for quite some time now with popular hits such as “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face”, she continues to produce albums that attract attention from listeners everywhere. In recent years, Gaga has put out music for several movies such as “Joker” and “Top Gun Maverick”. Gaga’s new album “Mayhem”, however, brings the listener back to her past.
“Mayhem” released on Friday, March 7 with a total of 14 songs, ranging from three to four minutes each. I did not know what to expect from Gaga because of her wide range of music genres, so this album definitely surprised me. I was amazed to see that Gaga had returned to her 2000’s roots. This album matched the feel of songs like “Paparazzi (2008) and “Applause (2013)”. But, “Mayhem” had very similar “vibes,” also. They had very upbeat backtracks, but also some that were slower, making these songs more “dance music.”
The first songs I listened to on the album were “Die With A Smile” featuring Bruno Mars and “Abracadabra”. These songs were popular on TikTok before the album officially came out, making it easy for them to gain popularity and listeners. I have to say “Die With A Smile” is my favorite song on the album. I have always liked Bruno Mars and the collabs he is involved with, and this one especially stands out. While it is one of the slower songs on the album, I think Mars and Gaga sang it very well and had equal parts in the song, making it a true feature. “Abracadabra” isn’t my favorite song on the album, but I do have to say it is catchy. It can get annoying based on how much it is played, but it was very well written.
Some other songs I liked very much on the album were “Disease” and “LoveDrug”. The song “LoveDrug” was a song I didn’t expect. Based on the title, I expected loud beats and sounds, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was slower than some of the other songs like “Garden of Eden” and “Vanish into You”, and I particularly liked the tone of the lyrics in “LoveDrug.” The song “Disease” very much represented her past music in the “vibe” and especially the lyrics. I believe it is very catchy, but it isn’t annoying.
While I did like her comeback to her past pop genre, a lot of the songs sounded the same. Many of the songs also had strange pauses and endings, which turned me away from liking them. But overall, I enjoyed the majority of the album.
