While creating new music in the world, Shawn Mendes has brought a new face and light to what he wants audiences to think when they hear his name. When listening to the new album you are able to hear the growth and passion he has felt throughout the years put into lyrics. Straying away from the ideas of young love and passion he focuses on his personal experience with mental health and other struggles.
I have found when listening to the new album the song I most resonate with is Isn’t That Enough. The song brings great passion making it possible to feel deeply the focus it brings to self-worth as well as self-love when we live in a world with such high expectations and intense amounts of pressure on us. When hearing the lyrics like “My hand’s still shakin’, my mind’s still racin’ My heart’s still breakin’ in two, I’m still changin’, my friends stay patient, My mother still calls for the news,” it helps me reflect on his struggles and shows his growth and perseverance making it what I feel is the most relatable song on his new album.
Having shifted into this new form of language as well as emotion portrayed through his art he still can express the same charm from his previous music. His music still focuses on genres like pop and folk-rock making it so fans can still feel a touch of Mendes’s previous music while he emphasizes the challenges he has faced in the last couple of years in the music industry. Since being a fan of Mendes since I was young, I can still the essence of his teen years through his music but now you are able to feel the growth of character he has experienced through time.
With each track added to his new album, Shawn, you can feel a new emotion that comes with that. While making you feel things like his success, failures, life lessons, and grief that come with hard times, the album is a perfect example of an outlet. This new album highlights the growth and exposure Mendes has persevered to make a relatable and passionate voice for his fans to hear. While being a listener, I can’t express enough of the empathy as well as relation I feel when concentrating on this album.
