It has been nothing short of a substantial year for Shannon Singer. Along with her new name has come challenges in the classroom, but an opportunity she could not turn down. This new journalism and Tower advisor is ready to take the responsibility of continuing the legacy and tradition of the newspaper.
Singer, who was previously known as Ms. Sugamele, has taken over in room 144 after the leave of former advisor “Edge.” Singer is not new to journalism whatsoever. In her high school days, she was involved in her school publication. Singer said copy editing and interviewing were her favorite parts of the class in high school, and she entered her teaching career in hopes of eventually teaching journalism.
“As soon as the former advisor came up to me and told me the position was open, I was immediately interested,” Singer said. “She recommended that I take over the role and I immediately said yes.”
Before taking on Journalism, Singer worked in the English department at South and was the 2024 Class Advisor. She said she wants to bring her teaching style and personality to Journalism more so than educational elements.
“I am very high energy, and that’s something that’s unique to me in my teaching style,” Singer said. “Icebreakers, team bonding and getting close as a staff is crucial to the team, and that’s what the Tower staff is.”
Singer’s main goal for this school year is to come in and see how Tower operates. She said she also wants to be able to offer her advice and guidance to all of the students.
“My biggest plan is to observe, take it in and learn as we go,” Singer said. “And then after this year, take some of that wisdom from this year and use it to make improvements in the coming years.”
Being new to anything can be a challenge especially to a class that has many traditions. Singer said she is trying to learn it all and to fill the shoes of someone who was great before her.
“I think that in itself, the learning is a challenge, but it’s a fun challenge,” Singer said.
