The past eight years of gruesome debates, violent protests and historic elections have made politics a very controversial topic. One’s political views can be taken into account when deciding who you want to be in your life, and for most children, our political views have been shaped by our parents. Therefore, they may change as we mature and grow into adults and gain more firsthand experiences with politics and policies. Additionally, if we are not capable of voting, then our political opinions should not be a reason that we push people out of our life.
I do understand that someone’s beliefs and opinions can be a way you get to know their values. However, if you are open to hearing their point of view and sharing your thoughts and opinions as well, it should not be a deal breaker.
I have been in relationships in the past and present where our political opinions did not align, yet it never dictated my feelings towards the other person. I found that not discussing political thoughts with another is the easiest way to deal with contradicting beliefs.
Overall, I would say that politics should never come in between relationships. Especially if the person is so much more than who they voted for, they should not be cut off for their preferences.
