From her Create with Tate days on YouTube to becoming a hit singer and even releasing her third album, So Close to What, Tate McRae has grown in both fame and skill. With the release of this new album, McRae shows off her songwriting abilities in ways listeners have never heard before.
McRae released three of the 15 songs off the album as singles, these include “It’s ok I’m ok”, “2 hands”, and “Sports car”. These songs gave fans a sneak peak into the overall vibe of the album, with a majority of the songs being more upbeat. Ever since I first listened, I’ve been impressed with the depth of the lyrics, such as how in “Purple lace bra” McRae expresses how she hasn’t felt seen or heard in her previous relationships or in “Revolving door” where she describes what it feels like to be in a toxic relationship that you keep going back to.
Despite those troubles with previous partners, The Kid LAROI, her current boyfriend, actually features on a song on the album titled “I know love”. The song captures the feeling one gets when they find love in the oddest of places. With the combination of the heartfelt lyrics about the unpredictability of love combined with the catchy beat, this song is easily one of my favorites on the album.
People have found some of McRae’s unreleased songs that were from her Think Later era, one of them being “Siren sounds”. This song has lingered on the internet for months and months, however, McRae decided to release it as a bonus song on So Close to What just three days after the album’s debut. On the unreleased version, the song included a bridge that many fans, including myself, loved, yet it was scrapped on the official release.
This album and the songs on it will create an unforgettable concert experience at her Miss Possessive tour, starting up this March. This won’t be her first rodeo when it comes to putting on a great performance. She has toured for both her previous albums and has proved herself to be one of the most impressive concert performers. McRae has been dancing from a young age and it has improved the quality of her shows, giving audiences both a sight to see and an unforgettable experience.
Although it is early on in the year to make any assumptions yet, I would not be surprised to hear that So Close to What is in competition for any awards. This album tells McRae’s story as a girlfriend and pop star beautifully through her intricate lyrics and rhythm and is deserving of any nominations it may receive during award season.
