Welcome to the third edition of Lucy’s Letters. As we all settle into the new year, things can get boring, repetitive and you may just be ready for school to end. Usually during the cold weather season and days with shortened sunlight, bad days are more prone. “Bad days,” that can mean a different experience for everyone, but for each person they are quite recognizable.
During these days, the first instinct is to slack off in school and/or getting called out to avoid spending your already low energy. However, I think that it builds character to power through the school day. There are many things that distract you at school. Whereas at your home, you are by yourself, most likely watching some screen to drown your negative feelings out.
I know that staying at school sounds like the worst case scenario, but it’s better to just thug it out than to make up for the work that you missed that day. If you had piles of homework that you missed, wouldn’t that just make you more stressed and overwhelmed?
I am still learning how to get through the bad days, but so far I have managed them. Here are some ways to get through the day when you are not feeling the best:
1. Surround yourself with your closest people, they have probably experienced bad days too and they probably have advice. If you don’t want their advice, you can just have people to give you love and sometimes it helps to just be in the presence of people you care about.
2. Focus on your work and get it done. This is the best distractor. Diverting your mind off of your bad mood and negative thoughts is crucial. So, might as well be productive and take a load off of your shoulder.
3. If you are at home and having a bad day, find something to do that’s not staring at a screen. I find that drawing and listening to music helps me the best. Find something that you enjoy and that calms you down.
4. Keep in mind that these days come and go. At the moment it may feel like the end of the world, but just remember that you have the ability to get through the day and move on.
Soon, midwinter break will be here, then spring break and then summer. This patch of cold weather, pale skin and short days will be over. The sun will be out and there will be more to look forward to. Take each bad day as it is and have faith that things will be better and easier.
