Tables are set and volunteers are ready to put on Grosse Pointe’s third “Skilled Trades Career Night”. Over the past few weeks Grosse Pointe North’s counselors, particularly counselor Jill Davenport, have been preparing for the big day, Feb. 27 from 6-8 p.m. This event aims to help students explore future opportunities that they may not be aware of but may be of interest to them.
“Some students prefer to have a career that is hands-on, not sitting in an office or at a desk all day,” Davenport said. “They [skilled trades] can still provide students with a good education, and, frankly, a lot of money.”
Davenport believes that it is important to expose students to all the options they have for their futures, especially the skilled trades. Firemen, plumbers and construction workers will be present at this event to share their personal experiences in the trades.
“It takes a significant amount of time to organize, but it’s worth it,” Davenport said. “We hope that students take full advantage of the opportunity because it can be very beneficial.”
