Student Evelyn Smith ’25 thinks GP offers many American food restaurants, but all of them seem to carry the same tasting burger or fries. With new restaurants in the village, a new modern twist like Sidecar has revived the old basic fries into waffle fries, which can be something different to many.
“I feel like we have a lot of burger places in The Village and on The Hill, most of the places are relatively three miles away from each other and sell all the same food like burgers and fries,” Smith said. “I’m kinda sick of the stores around here, they all taste the same. I think some places need to switch it up.”
On a more optimistic note, Josh Koch ’25 thinks that the corner to corner restaurants offer things for the good of everyone. While some places may be similar, they all will contain mostly different things that make their place differentiated from each other. For some, it’s about the history and tradition that these classic restaurants offer.
“I feel like Grosse Pointe has lots of restaurants and there’s always something new opening, I can always find something I want,” Koch said. “People don’t like change especially in Grosse Pointe, my grandparents can’t cook as easily due to age, so they go out to eat often and it’s the same half dozen restaurants.”
For some, stores like coffee places can seem very repetitive, but Ms. Barbour thinks GP carries many similar items but with different factors that go into buying an item. Like the quality and price of the items.
“I think that a lot of stores offer the same things, but at different price points and different qualities,” Barbour said. “We do have a lot of coffee shops, but people like to drink coffee so the different variations make it nice.”
Murphy Russell ’25 agrees with Smith that the repetitiveness of the stores around here can get boring and often feel annoying like you’re going to the same places over and over again. Many wish that the new and upcoming vacant stores will turn into something new and different that this town needs.
“I believe GP has similar stores throughout the town, there’s lots of restaurants with the same foods,” Russell said. “I hope in the future there are different options that sell a variety of different things. I like the stores in GP but while living here it gets more and more boring to go to the same stores.”
As far as stores, Smith thinks the village is also home to many small town shops that are often walked past never to be walked into. The authenticity adds to the small town feel and keeps GP traditional, but sometimes can be very repetitive with the same products.
“I think stores get repetitive around little boutiques, and we have so many in the village that I have never walked into,” Smith said. “I feel like they practically all sell the same sweaters and pants.”
