Christmas time is approaching, which means the Student Association (SA) is starting up Adopt a Family as south as the club does yearly during the holidays. It is an opportunity for students and teachers to work together to help less fortunate families be able to have the Christmas they deserve.
Chair members of the SA are working hard and deliberately to make sure things are staying organized and smoothly. SA Vice President Olivia McMillin ‘25 is geared up and ready to help make this year’s Adopt a Family the best one yet.
“This year the chair members including myself have focused on having an organized and well thought out approach to help increase our donations from last year,” McMillin ‘25 said.” Our communication within the Student Association has improved a lot and I think it will benefit us tremendously.
Although things are looking up for the SA’s progress, some challenges need to be addressed so we as a student body can do what we can to help these families in need and give them the Christmas they deserve.
“Some big challenges we face during Adopt a Family are student participation and timely contributions,” McMillin ‘25 “If we can come together and make sure we are getting these donations in on time it will make a huge impact on these families”
Head of the Adopt a Family charity Elle Petz ‘24 has faced some challenges when helping organize this fundraiser but has continued working hard for their overall goal.
“Last year the biggest issue was not being able to raise enough money in third hour classes,” Petz ‘24 said. “ To combat these issues we have decided to have the option of classing combined if they don’t think they can reach their goals.”
Jenna Roebuck from the math department is thrilled to hear that Adopt a Family is back and started up. She has been doing this for many years and loves the feeling of giving back, especially during the holidays.
“The most rewarding part of this whole thing is seeing my students help out and make a difference,” Roebuck said. “This helps these students grow as individuals and being able to help those in need is so special.”
“Something that is really special about t Adopt a Family is that it is completely anonymous,” Petz ‘24 said. “ this way these families don’t have to worry about others recognizing the name and they feel one hundred percent free of judgment.”
This is such a special thing that the south community is doing and it should be a tradition for years to come. Helping these families have the best Christmas is what matters most. The holidays are the season for giving and everyone should be able to participate and do something to help others. SA’s goal is not only to help others but to help keep the reputation that our community has.
“Even little donations are helpful in making a difference,” Roebuck said. “ South has such a positive legacy as a community and school and by doing the little things and helping others we are able to continue this reputation for years to come.”
