Greeting everyone with a smile, students and staff may have seen a new face upon entering school in the mornings.
Daniel Hyliard has taken over the role of assistant principal after the retirement of Joseph Spryszak. Hyliard now oversees many things including sophomore and senior attendance and behavior, student activities and state testing like the SAT and PSAT.
“We initiated the inaugural club fair because we wanted to increase the number of students that were participating,” Hyliard said. “For testing, we’re trying to change some of the AP testing to be in one place.”
In the past, Hyliard has had an enjoyable experience working as a building principal. This led him to search for a similar role, which is how he found South as an option to continue his career.
“I know that the building principal has a ton of responsibility, so I’m a good team player,” Hyliard said. “I work well behind the scenes, and I like to connect with kids positively.”
Not only was Hyliard drawn toward South because of the position offered, but also the community. He had taken an interest in the location and walkability of Grosse Pointe when searching for a change.
“I want a quality of life,” Hyliard said. “Something my family was looking for was a community that wasn’t sprawling, but close-knit where you could walk to places.”
Adjusting to South has not been hard for Hyliard because he found that he loves the values of the community, as well as respect. He believes he has landed in a community that is supportive and cares about others.
“It’s a good feeling for kids to say ‘Hello’ to you and take a genuine interest to talk to you,” Hyliard said. “In the mornings, people will say ‘Good Morning,’ which is very warm and welcoming.”
Although there are many responsibilities and business that come with being an assistant principal, Hyliard has found it to be a positive challenge. Student’s respect for following policies and procedures and how they treat others has made South special for him.
“I’m looking forward to just being accepted into the community and being a part of it,” Hyliard said. “I am looking forward to getting to know the kids, and getting to know people’s names. I also am taking a genuine interest in the overall well being of the kids and people here.”
