From hour to hour, we are given 5 minutes to get to class, go to the restroom, and get a drink of water all before time is up.
Many teachers reprimand their students when they must ask to go to the bathroom or get a drink at the start of class because they miss valuable information. Although the reality is that passing time doesn’t allow enough time to do either of these things. We are lucky to go to a big school but that also means that one class could be in the S building on the first floor and you have to get to the main building on the second floor which can take up most of your time.
Many teachers are also lecturing or working until the bell rings, and it takes students time to pack up. There is always a traffic jam at the phone caddy. Just getting out of the classroom can take a minute or two. Not to mention the slow walkers. Students are walking at a snail’s pace, and getting around is nearly impossible.
The passing time used to be seven minutes which I think would be the perfect amount of time. I’m not sure why it changed to five because with seven students would have enough time to go to the bathroom and do everything they need to go and still get to their next class in time.
Students might need to talk to their teacher after class and then the teachers have to write a pass for the student to go to their next class which takes up time from both classes. Students that have lots of books go to their locker in between classes and switch books out all of which can’t be done in five minutes.
Students also are very eager to get out of class and they pack up minutes before the bell rings and line up at the door. I think that if we were given more passing time students wouldn’t feel like they had to get out of class as fast as possible and they would work until the bell knowing they have enough time in between classes to do what they need to do.
With a seven minute passing period, students would be less tardy to class and would be more dedicated to using the time they have in class. Students would have time to go to their locker, get a drink of water, talk to their teachers, go to their locker, and be in class on time.
