The National Honors Society (NHS) at Grosse Pointe South went on a trip to plant trees at Mesmer Park in collaboration with Greening of Detroit. Members going on the trip were excused during the school day on October 17th to support the sustainable growth of vegetation in Mesmer Park. Katie Barbour is the advisor for NHS and worked with Greening of Detroit to coordinate the event.
“It’s been pretty easy to put together, we’re partnering with Greening of Detroit, they asked if we were interested last year and we weren’t able to,” Barbour said. “I thought that this would be a fun activity to do in the fall, because NHS doesn’t really have an opportunity to do things all together.”
The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroit natives by providing job training and involving youth in the education of the natural environment. For the last 35 years, they’ve been committed to the growth and economic viability of Detroit, primarily through repurposing vacant land into green space.
“I think they’re doing an outstanding job of getting involved with different communities,” Barbour said. “It’s a great thing to do, whether it be to support the climate or to support the city of Detroit.”
