It’s that time of the year again, fall sports and homecoming are just around the corner. For most it can be exciting, but for others dress shopping and finding a date can be stressful. This year, however, the seniors will experience a bittersweet moment of it being their last.
The concern for most is what their homecoming plans consist of; will they attend the dance or are they just the social events corresponding with the dance. Class of 2025 Student Association (SA) president, Lucy Stidham ’25, believes that everyone should attend the dance because it is the class’s last chance.
“As it being the last year we get to experience it, I think that seniors should take advantage and go to the dance,” Stidham said. “Some of these students and teachers work so hard to make the dance the best it can be. These memories are what are so important, lots of seniors will regret not going to the homecoming dance this year.”
Not only is Sitdham planning to attend the dance, but as SA president one the main taste for the club is to decide the theme. Announcing the theme is an annual way to keep the school excited for the dance.
Stidham is planning to go to dance but she is also helping make it happen. As the president of SA, one of her main responsibilities is overseeing the decision for the theme of the dance. Every year the announcement of the theme keeps students excited to go to the dance.
“The theme of this year’s dance is Hollywood,” Stidham says. “We have so many fun things planned and cannot wait to see it in action.”
While many students are going to the dance, others are not feeling the festivities this year. Anthony Ricci ’25 is not planning on attending the dance and does not think that it will live up to the usual hype that comes before the actual event.
“My favorite part about homecoming is going to dinner and then hanging out with my friends afterward,” Ricci said. “I went to the dance last year but it was not as enjoyable for me as freshman year.”
Class council, separate from SA, works year round to organize the spirit week, the week that leads up to homecoming. The class of 2025’s class advisor, Kendra Caralis, has been working with the class.
“By senior year students are excited, they are at the top and class brings an extra level of excitement that isn’t normally there,” Caralis said. “Plus the end is in sight, prom is something, graduation is coming up, this is your senior year homecoming, senior year football season, senior year everything. The excitement is natural and it is finally your chance to go.”
Last year, many students were upset with the new rule implemented last year- keep all students at the dance from 8-9:30pm. This rule will be in place this year as well, aiming to keep all students safe.
“If I was given the option of leaving when I wanted, I do think that would change my decision about going to the dance.” Ricci said. “I would rather enjoy getting dinner with my friends without worrying about rushing to get over to the dance.”
With many reflecting on how past dances were and letting that cloud their judgment, SA and class council have been working hard to make it a great time for all seniors who are approaching their last opportunity to attend these school events.
“In the school the excitement is really from the seniors,” Caralis said. “It is their (seniors) final chance to win everything and hopefully sweep all of the categories.”
