South is scheduled to host the annual North vs. South “Stick It to Cancer Game” on Tuesday, Sept. 24, a yearly admirable tradition of raising funds for cancer research. This year’s game aims to build on last year’s success, which collected $5,090 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The teams will be wearing custom pink and white jerseys to symbolize the fight against cancer. During a special halftime program, players from both teams will honor friends or family members who have battled cancer or have passed away from it.
“It’s cool that North and South come together as one team to help people with cancer,” Zoe Schatko ’26, a second-year varsity player said. “It’s tough to listen to my teammates share about their loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer or watched them fight it during the halftime ceremony. But it’s also inspiring to know that the money we’re raising is going to help those in need.”
In addition to the game, the South team will be running a car wash fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the S-lot at South. All profits from the car wash will support the American Cancer Society. Donations will also be collected during the game, with fans encouraged to gift.
Hannah Agnone ’27, a first-year varsity player, shared the responsibilities of the players for the car wash. “We each have our own thing that we help out with, whether it’s organizing the car wash, making the T-shirts, or talking to the North players about the game.” Agnone said.
To organize the car wash fundraiser, the team captains have set up a team SignUpGenius, encouraging players to volunteer for various tasks. Participants can sign up for specific jobs, such as bringing essential supplies including buckets, towels, and soap.
“Overall, the whole event is very memorable because it helps bring together our team and the community, and working together with North creates a meaningful experience,” Captain Scout Webber ’25 said. “We always have a big crowd for the game because it allows everyone to play for someone who had cancer.”
With the game and car wash close in hand, the excitement builds for a day of lively rivalry and communal solidarity, as both North and South come together to raise funds for cancer research and uplift the community.
“We’re here to give our all for this game and the fight against cancer,” Agnone ’27 said. “It’s an honor to play in a game that holds such a deep meaning.”
