It was nine in the morning on a Saturday, below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the sun was barely making an appearance. Yet over 100 people gathered on the track to support the South athletics program.
For 20 years, the South Athletics Boosters Club has been sponsoring “Run the Pointe”, a fundraiser where the entire 25-dollar registration fee goes to the South athletic program of the participant’s choosing. Each person can choose to run a 5k, 10k or a two-mile walk.
Assistant coach for the Girls’ Cross Country team, Louise Davey, said that this was an awesome event because it showed the community the work that runners put into their sport.
“I think there’s a lot that goes into [running] physically and mentally, when you speed up and slow down,” said Davey. “There might not be any goal you’re defending or anything like that, but it’s still a physical activity you do as a team that has an end goal.”
Boys” Cross Country Captain, Andrés Link, had a great race. He not only achieved a personal record, but also enjoyed getting to cheer everyone on.
“[My favorite part of Run the Pointe is] getting to see all these people who don’t run normally do what cross country runners have to do daily,” said Link.
For event chairman Chris Bernard, the event not only is an amazing fundraiser for South athletics, but it’s also a place where the togetherness of the community is really put on display.
“The support from not only the spectators, but also the other runners once they get done is really something special I’ve seen with this particular race,” Bernard said. “Because it’s so student-heavy, you get to finish the race and are cheering on the other students, and it really makes an environment that’s unique.”
