Boys track sets new school records at State Finals
June 7, 2019
Thanks to their success in this year’s regionals, the boys track team took on states on June 1 in Grand Rapids, and performed very well.
This year the team got to send 10 of their qualifying runners along with two alternates and set two new school records while there.
“I would 100 percent call this year’s states a success considering me and my friends set the school record in the 4x200m, it’s nice to be recognized for that because we have been working very hard all year,” Grant Hart ‘20 said.
According to Hart, the conditions helped play a role in the team’s success with the temperature and wind being perfect for running.
“I couldn’t have asked for better weather, we’ve ran in some awful conditions throughout the course of the season so this was really worth it,” Hart said.
According to runner Charlie Rulison ‘21, states is a really fun competition to watch because it’s some of the top runners in the state of Michigan.
“Some meets during the regular season can be boring because its just heat after heat of JV, but in states you get to see the top runners in all of Michigan,” Rulison said.
According to Rulison, states is really where you receive you recognition and where the stands are packed to the brim.
“Throughout the season, barely anyone would come to our meets, we would maybe get 15-25 parents to show up but its really wasn’t much. In states, there was a huge crowd so I really felt appreciated for all the hard work I have put in,” Rulison.
According to head coach Mark Sonnenberg, this years track and field team has been one of the best teams in South history.
“If you really take a look at the numbers, you can see that this team, in particular, is really up there, they have set a handful of school records and even won the region,” Sonnenberg said.
According to Sonnenberg, he is extremely proud of the work that these boys have put in and how far they’ve come from the beginning of the year.
“This year’s team has without a doubt been one of my favorites,” Sonnenberg said. “I can tell they are excited to take a break from running but I really think they deserve it.”
