Construction of new track to begin June 3
May 20, 2019
Starting on June 3, construction for the new track will begin in hopes of creating a much safer running environment for the sports teams.
With the track being over three decades old, the top layer of the track has started to crack and has created a hazard for some of the runners.
“This track holds so many memories from the past years and I’m reluctant to see it go but it’s definitely for the best,” assistant coach Mike Novak said.
According to Novak, he has seen many records broken on this track but hopes that a new and improved track will bring more records to the table.
“Hopefully with a new track our runners will be more motivated to run faster and try harder because right now they’re sick of running on a worn down track,” assistant coach Tom Wise said.
According to Athletic Director Chris Booth, this decision was made by South’s administration and Central Office and we are very fortunate to be getting a new track.
“Being a fairly expensive heavy installment we could now be more fortunate and grateful for this track and we will surely do our best to keep it in good shape,” Booth said.
According to Novak, he is very interested to see how getting a new track will affect the performance of his runners.
“Maybe implementing a new track will give our runners a boost or something and I’m really interested to see how our team next year will perform on it,” Novak said.
According to hurdler Corey McGraw ’22, South track teams will keep getting better with the new addition of the track and last year with the new blocks.
“Our team definitely got better with the new blocks we got last year so I wouldn’t be surprised if we got even better with the new track,” McGraw said.
According to Novak, the timing of this new track couldn’t be better as the past few years the track teams have been improving exponentially.
“This year and most likely next, our teams have been some of the best I have seen,” Novak said, “I am just so excited to see the teams in the future perform on a new track.”
