Jazz band plays at famous club in Detroit
Grosse Pointe South Jazz band along with Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra played at the jazz club Cliff Bell’s in downtown Detroit on May 4.
This is the third time that the GPS jazz band has played live at Cliff Bells, starting this tradition in 2014.
“Of everything all the bands do, between the Concert Bands, the Wind Ensemble, symphony band, the marching band and the jazz band, the Cliff Bell’s performance every year is my favorite one that we do,” director Christopher Takis said.
Cliff Bell’s is an authentic jazz club placed right behind the Fox Theatre.
“[The Jazz Band] only gets three hours of rehearsal a week and two separate occasions, but the kids make it a priority and as a result they’re pretty good for it,” Takis said.
According to Takis, Jazz Band meets up every Monday evening for two hours and Thursday’s right after school for one hour to practice.
“[The Jazz Band got] to go downtown and play under the lights in the big city in a room that was built specifically for jazz, and I thought they played spectacularly, they were really really good,” Takis said.
