Film Club lets students see movies before they reach theaters

Film Club is an open space for all to come and talk about the films students have seen and what’s out in the theaters. About once a month, they discuss a film that the club would want to see before it comes out in theaters.
“I still have some connections with film studios and they will let me bring 10 or 20 kids to see a new film before it comes out,” club advisor and film teacher John Monaghan said.
So far, they have seen LaLa Land, Paterson, Accountant and Moonlight before they reached theaters. The club enjoys the chance to see a film before they hear too much about them.
“My favorite part hands down is the early viewings. Usually, I go to a movie and already heard so much about it that my opinions get skewed. When I go to an early viewing, I’m able to form my own opinions,” Drew Agley ‘17, a member of Film Club, said.
Agley joined in Sept. of this year because she loves film class and Mr. Monaghan.
“Film class made me really interested in how films are made and all of the techniques that go into it, and the class was a great way to build off of that,” Agley said.
Typically, there is a point in the meeting where everyone goes around and talks for a couple minutes on a film they have seen and make their case for it.
Lawson Wohlfarth ‘18 joined film club around Jan. of his sophomore year.
“I’m really into movies and wanted to see what the club was like. My favorite part is definitely the pre-screenings,” Wohlfarth said.
Monaghan started the Film Club five years ago and is hoping to do a joint event for a film screening.
“The Gay Alliance Club has approached us about showing a film that we could both promote,” Monaghan said.
Film Club meets every Monday from 3:15 till 4:00 in room 403.
