Cass Community Social Services
What is it?
Cass Community Social Services (CCSS) is a Detroit-based agency dedicated to providing food, housing, health services and job programs to Detroit’s homeless.
How you can get involved:
CCSS offers many volunteer opportunities, from preparing and serving meals to the homeless to setting up Christmas decorations. Groups from 2-100 at a time can go to the Detroit location for just an hour or the whole day. Prior to volunteering, email Sue Pethoud at [email protected] or call (313) 883-2277.

Services for Older Citizens
What is it?
Services for Older Citizens (SOC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping seniors of the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods maintain their lives in independence and dignity.
How you can get involved:
SOC hosts many regular programs and special events throughout the year, with opportunities including Meals on Wheels, office work, serving lunch, helping at holiday parties and many more. If interested, contact director of volunteer services Heidi Uhlig at [email protected] or (313) 649-2107.

Center for Success Detroit Tutoring
What is it?
Through Grosse Pointe Old Devils Charities, Center for Success Detroit Tutoring provides literacy based individualized one-on-one tutoring for school aged students twice a week from late September to mid-May. Sessions are held Monday-Thursday from 4:30-5:30 or 5:30-6:30 p.m.
How you can get involved:
Once a week for an hour, commit to working with and mentoring a student. Mentors must complete a 90 minute New Mentor Training session before being placed with a student. A mentor registration form can be filled out at http://www.gpolddevils.org/cfsdetroit/mentor-registration/.

Gleaners Community Food Bank
What is it?
Gleaners is committed to distributing nutritional, high quality food. Gleaners adopts best practices and cost effective systems and procedures to achieve the highest possible return on its human and financial resources.
How you can get involved:
Gleaners offers several different ways to help out. You can donate monthly or give a one-time donation. They also have several events and food drives for people in several different areas to attend.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen
What is it?
Founded in 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves Metro Detroit by providing food, clothing, and human development programs to the people of our community.
How you can get involved:
Capuchin Soup Kitchen offers many ways to donate. To donate you can do it online, by mail or phone. You can also volunteer by serving meals, sorting and sizing clothing, preparing emergency food packages, working in the Earthworks Garden, tutoring or teaching or mentoring children and teens, summer camps for kids, thanksgiving basket give away, christmas coat program and assisting at our special events held throughout the year.

Detroit Goodfellows
What is it?
No Kiddie Without a Christmas. Since 1914, that’s been the mission of the Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit. This year, 34,000 children in Detroit, Harper Woods, Highland Park, River Rouge and Hamtramck will get holiday gift boxes filled with clothing, candy, books, toys and more.
How you can get involved:
By donating money, you can support Detroit Goodfellows in purchasing toys to include in their Christmas packages which are distributed to children each year.
