A rumor of a second senior skip day happening on Tuesday, May 29 has been floating around the school, Dr. Matthew Outlaw said, principal, in an e-mail.
Outlaw said in the e-mail that the school prepared for one senior skip day after prom, recognizing the unofficial holiday.
“As we all know and some have experienced in the past, Senior Skip Day is an unofficial tradition at almost every high school in America. South’s unofficial date for this has always been the first school day following prom. This week, many South seniors observed this unofficial holiday on Monday the 21,” said Outlaw in the e-mail. “The school and the teachers, while valuing every minute of instruction, prepared for this and adjusted lesson plans for those seniors that chose to take part in this unrecognized holiday.”
However, the school will be treating Tuesday, May 29 like any regular school day and not recognizing a second senior skip day, Outlaw said in the e-mail encouraging students to continue to attend school.
“With three days left before exams, this is instruction time that is needed,” said Outlaw in an e-mail. “Tuesday’s attendance, as with every day, remains a required day of school for all students.”
Most teachers agree with Outlaw that a second skip day is unnecessary. Cindy Morefield-Pinder, a Spanish teacher, thinks that a senior skip day, “should not be allowed in any way shape, or form.”
“Since when do they (the seniors) dictate their own schedules?” said Morefield-Pinder. “It’s almost disrespectful in my opinion.”
Social Studies teacher Dave Rayburn shares the opinion that the seniors do not need a second skip day. If anything, the freshmen should get a day off, Rayburn said.
“They are under more stress adjusting to high school,” said Rayburn of the underclassmen.
However, many seniors, including Chloe Gellert ’12, believe they have earned the day off on Tuesday, and have decided to participate in the second senior skip day.
“I’m almost done, so another day off won’t hurt,” said Gellert.
Michael McCuish ’12 plans to skip as well, coming to the conclusion that one day off will not affect his academics this late into the year.
“Friends of mine will also be joining me and taking part on Tuesday,” said McCuish. “I’m almost done so a day off isn’t too bad.”
Seniors may decide to take school off on Tuesday, but school will continue on as usual, as teachers and administrations will not adjust their schedules for a second senior skip day, and encourage students to attend as usual.
