With March comes spring and for sports enthusiasts most importantly, March Madness. As the regular college basketball season is coming to an end avid basketball fans are beginning to make their predictions on who will be winning March Madness. Many simply find enough entertainment from watching it while others get an adrenaline rush from placing bets and curating brackets.
Henry Tiderington ’25 is a devoted fan of all college sports. He finds himself constantly staying up to date on the popular sports each season. In winter he watches both hockey and basketball which allows him to feel knowledgeable when it comes to March Madness. With Tideringtons expertise he will be placing bets on this upcoming tournament.
“Each year during March Madness I strategically make a bracket based on the performance of the different teams in their regular season play,” Tiderington said.
Tiderington believes that with Johni Broome, a 6’10 center and considerably one of the best players in the league currently, Auburn has a chance at winning it all.
“I think that Auburn will win it all since they have Johni Broome and beyond that a very experienced team,” Tiderington said. “ So far this season they have also beaten some of the best teams which has been a very good showing for them.”
Luca Parlangeli ’25 will also be watching this tournament however, unlike Tiderington his interest in this has sparked from his participation in the sport. Parlangeli participated on the boys varsity basketball team this past season and although his season is over it has allowed him to focus more on the collegiate level games.
“I have been playing basketball for most of my life so I find a lot of joy from watching it,” Parlangeli said. “During March Madness I will be placing my bets on Michigan State winning the whole thing.”
Similar to Parlangeli, Maddy Benard ’25 participated in girls varsity basketball this past season but she will be continuing her basketball career next year at Wayne State. Benard shared how watching basketball helps her to learn and become a better player.
“My family is very into basketball so we stay up to date on tournaments such as March Madness,” Benard said. “For me I learn new techniques and strategies from watching college players.”
Overall, the anticipation for March Madness in these next two weeks will leave basketball fans similar to Tiderington on the edge of their seats as they watch who will get the final spots in the bracket.
“March Madness is full of upsets which I think is one of the reasons it is so fun to watch since you really never can predict who will win, but it is fun to make brackets with your friends,” Tiderington said.
