Behind the squeaky noises from their basketball shoes echoing throughout the school, the Girls Varsity Basketball team has been working endlessly hard to secure a win at districts. This aggressive team has trained non-stop to secure a spot as the second seed in districts by playing hard competition in the season.
Coach Kevin Richards said that there is no room for error, they have to make all plays because there is no chance for a redo. However, he said that since this team has played many challenging games in preparation, they are ready for the competition.
“We have played very difficult (teams) and have been rewarded,” Richards said. “Despite our record, we have the 2 seed in the district.”
Richards’ plan for the team is to come out strong and create a dominating force that leads the other team to surrender some of their powers on the court.
“We are going to try and overwhelm them on both ends with extra players to try and simulate pressure that we will receive,” Richards said. “Our focus will be on ball security, rebounding and transition defense and of course shooting.”
Starter Catherine Pattie ’25 said that the way they will win is due to the team’s chemistry and good attitude. She said that the team has grown really strong bonds and that everyone contributes to the team’s bond.
”I feel like I bring some excitement to the team and help prepare for the game by doing my part,” Pattie said.
Pattie also states that getting down the plays and executing them in the game will tie everything together. Cheering her and other teammates on is the team manager Maya Burton ’25. She attends every practice to help with the scoreboard and supporting the team. Burton watches over practice with unique lenses and can see the compatibility between teammates.
“I think what has been most beneficial is that the girls communicate and work with each other,” Burton said.
This is both Pattie’s and Burton’s last season on the team. Pattie said that since they are all so close it will be hard to leave a team that has triumphed through hard work and dedication.
“I am going to miss the girls, it’s been a long season and it will be sad for it to end,” Pattie said.
