After Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show I was pleasantly surprised. Before I only knew a few songs of his and wasn’t sure I would enjoy the halftime show. Watching the show, I was very impressed with the creativity of it and thought it was very well organized. I thought the order in which songs he sang was thought out. Kendrick seemed very comfortable on stage and the show seemed very well rehearsed. The transitions between each song were smooth, and I liked how “Uncle Sam” was there to give feedback on how Americans thought of the songs.
There were a few songs that I didn’t know so I found myself bored during those times, but during the songs I did know I found the show very enjoyable. The first song was a tad slow for my liking, but it helped ease the viewers for what was to come and helped build the excitement. I thought it was cool how the car became the center of the performance during the first song by having groups of backup dancers pile out of it. Aside from the musical artists, I also enjoyed the show’s backup dancers. The dancers were very simply dressed, which made the overall performance better, had they been too extravagant, it would have taken away from the performance.
Having the dancers dress in either red, white or blue and get into the formation of an American flag was a really good way of representing the U.S. in his performance.
Having Sza there was a really good addition and I think she sang well. I loved the songs they sang together like “Luther” and “All the Stars.” She came on theme with her all-red outfit and thought she did really well and kept it classy.
The star of the show was the awaited “Not Like Us.” I think this spiced up the show and to me it was the best part. Despite the potential controversy, he sang it anyway and I admire that and thought it made the performance that much stronger. Most people nowadays are worried about what others will say or how they react to certain things, but Kendrick made a “powermove” by singing it anyway and it really showed his strength as an artist.
