Ever since Todd McLellan replaced Derek Lalonde as the head coach for the Detroit Red Wings, the team has maintained an impressive record for the 2025 season. Like any other Detroit sports team, the Red Wings’ previous seasons have been a disappointment to fans.
However, 2025 is looking up for the Red Wings as they approach the Stanley Cup Playoffs. According to the National Hockey League (NHL) News, the Red Wings have broken their 13 year losing streak after just a few weeks with McLellan, paving the way for a possible victory in June.
Last year, I had the opportunity to watch the team drag themselves across the floor and wipe away any possibility of another Stanley Cup with their terrible plays and poor judgement of the opposing team’s capability. However, I think that this year may be different from the past.
McLellan seems to have a grip on the team that has motivated them to keep their hold on their top 10 spot in the eastern conference, providing some much needed positivity for the team. After watching some playbacks of the games myself, I can definitely see a difference in their confidence and a possibility for a ticket to the playoffs.
Although all of these statistics are proving to be very promising for the future of the Red Wings, the team’s past reputation says otherwise. This wouldn’t be the first time that the Red Wings would string thousands of fans along up to the last game before playoffs and then lose miserably and expect to come back better than ever the next year. But that was Lalonde’s version of the Red Wings, not McLellan’s.
It is my honest hope that the Red Wings will not repeat the past and finally give Detroit a win that will make them forget about the Lions losing this year. With McLellan leading the way, Detroit might just finally get what it wants.
The road to victory for the Red Wings will not be easy, but the performances that they have put on this year have shown that they are ready and willing to put in the work to make it there. The pressure is on for this team, and let’s just hope they don’t crash and burn like last time.
