As they reach the halfway point of their season, the Grosse Pointe United Gymnastics team (GPUG) shows a stellar performance time and time again. On Tuesday, Jan. 28, GPUG held their Senior Night during their meet against Birmingham United. Being the only senior on the team, Lucy Tull ’25 was thrilled by the festivities.
“It was actually really fun,” Tull said. “I felt like they did a nice ceremony and there weren’t as many seniors here so it went quicker.”
Tull has been doing gymnastics since a very young age and over the years her skills have sharpened. As her skillset has increased, so has her love for the sport.
“I enjoy the feeling of when you know you did something really good, like when you do a skill that’s harder for you,” Tull said. “You can always tell when it goes well and it feels really nice.”
Despite not having much knowledge on the sport, spectators like Al Allotta ’25 are captured by it. With this meet being his second gymnastics meet he’s attended, Allotta has begun to truly appreciate the sport.
“I came to the other one late, but I thought the vault in the downstairs gym was cool to watch,” Allotta said. “It was also senior night tonight, which made the meet more hype.”
With half the season left to go, this is the most critical time to perfect routines. Anna Nguyen ’27 (GPN) has been working hard on making her routines more precise and hopes to improve on them in the future.
“I want to work on getting my beam routine more consistent,” Nguyen said.
Becoming better in any sport is more than just being athletic enough, it involves support from those around you. With this being her second year on the team, Nguyen has found a community within the united team that is irreplaceable.
“I love my teammates and the family I’ve gained from gymnastics,” Nguyen said. “I just love the experience overall.”
