English teacher Katherine Parent is appointed as Grosse Pointe South’s new assistant principal for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year. She will oversee administrative duties for the ninth and 11th grade classes.
The position opened after former assistant principal Cynthia Parravano’s interim promotion to principal. On Jan.7, applications were opened to internal staff, and two rounds of interviews were conducted during the week of midterms. On Jan. 17 Parent was selected for the position.
“I was super excited when Mrs. Parravano came down and offered me the position,” Parent said. “I’m really eager for a change of pace. I’m really eager for the opportunity to more directly support the staff.”
Parent has taught at Grosse Pointe South for over a decade, while also acting as class advisor, school musical producer, AP-certified teacher and summer school coordinator. Student-teacher Tex Profitt will operate Parent’s role as an educator for the rest of the year, student government and the school musical will continue under Parent’s guidance. Parent has a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Michigan, and interned as assistant principal at South from 2017-2018.
“My goal for this period is to be as supportive as I possibly can to the administrative team and staff,” Parent said. “Anytime there’s a transition, people feel uncertain and uncomfortable, so I want to provide the most comfort and certainty I can.
