Within a minute of the puck drop to open the first period, the Blue Devils jumped ahead with a big goal. Soon after, they added on another, closing the first period with a 2-0 lead. Ella Smith ’26 spoke on the excitement of the early offensive attack and eventual victory.
“It was such a relief knowing we can work together and beat a team like Liggett right off the bat,” Smith said. “Such a cool feeling to cheer on your teammates when they score on our biggest rivals. It definitely pumped us up for the rest of the first period.”
Coming off of an all-state honorable mention, Abby Evans ’25 started off her season strong with a goal that put South up 3-0 in the second period, practically sealing the game. She said spirits were high in the locker room after the game and both her and her team’s performance lifted a weight off of her shoulder.
“It felt amazing to start off this season with such a monumental win,” Evans said. “Overall, throughout the game, I felt confident that we were going to win. This team is really strong and I believe that we have a really great chance of winning states this year to match the win from last year.”
A win like this has brought immense self-confidence to the team. Looking for a repeat of last season, Charlie Harr ’26 looks ahead to working towards defending their state title.
“It felt so good to prove that it was not a lucky win last year, and we can still win this year,” Harr said. “It excited me for the rest of the season and what we can possibly accomplish in states this year.”
