After a clean sweep of the district, this final win brought their regular season to a close. Going into the game, the team felt assured and collected, but after a 0-0 halftime score they knew they had to step up to the plate.
“I was feeling pretty relaxed coming into the game, we already clinched the MAC White,” Midfielder Jonah Bukovec 26’ said. “This game was just a ‘when we win it’ and then were undefeated in the MAC White champs. So not much pressure.”
At halftime, a much-needed pep talk settled down the overconfidence the team had in the first half. Increased possession of the ball and their ability to reclaim the second half brought forth success on the field.
“I think we went in way too confident which messed up our gameplay,” Forward Onction Zape ‘25 said. “We should have arrived at the game treating it like they were a really good team, and make sure to get that momentum going. We came back in the second half, it was way better than the first half.”
Starting slow, the halftime pep talk was not something players took lightly. After already clinching the MAC White championship, the team started more relaxed than usual. Many close calls occurred where Varsity head coach Chris Bolio thought the boys would lose the match.
“They weren’t really able to take the game as seriously in the first half, and that could be a very big weakness,” Bolio said.”Next week, the games are very important, as they are going to districts. Lakeview is coming up, they are our greatest competition.”
