It Ends with Us, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, is about a grieving Lily Bloom. Played by Blake Lively, she moves to Boston to pursue her lifelong dream of opening a flower shop shortly after her dad’s passing. While doing that, she meets Ryle Kincaid, played by Justin Baldoni. Lily and Ryle instantly fall in love, but this passion does not last long as it quickly turns into an abusive relationship.
One thing that stuck out to me about this film is that it didn’t have a hotline for people struggling with domestic violence at the beginning or end of the movie. This did not make sense as it was about a woman who endured abuse for part of her life. This sensitive topic in the movie could have potentially resurfaced past trauma that viewers dealt with.
“It Ends with Us [is] in theaters now, so grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it,” Lively said. Taken from a promotional video for the movie, This is extremely inconsiderate because saying that makes it seem that It Ends with Us will be an uplifting, quirky romance movie. It’s not just about a fashionable florist, it’s about a woman escaping an abusive relationship.
Not only did Lively make it seem that the movie would be a good movie to dress up and take photos in, but throughout the movie, she promoted “Blake Brown”, her haircare line. It seems like she has completely forgotten about the purpose of the movie, just so she can have a little extra money in her pockets.
Although this is a film about domestic violence survivors, it fails to capture the hardships many go through and does not advocate for the women who have had a history coming from abuse.
