As we approach the new school year, there are many staff members that have been hired at South, including new Assistant Principal Dr. Daniel Hyliard. Hyliard is taking the role of Joseph Spryszak who oversaw grades 10 and 12. Dr. Hyliard is looking forward to focusing on forming connections with South’s community, especially students.
“I’m looking forward to being part of a community, learning as many names as I can,” Hyliard said. “I feel like I live in this community now, so I have to spend time in it. Being fully embraced when I’m at school is most important to me.”
In his first weeks at South, Hyliard has been busy meeting with faculty members and trying to get used to what the school is all about, but also to figure out which ideas and events will connect him to such a different community to make him feel more at home. A well run school will be the first thing to connect Hyliard to this community.
Since the first day of school, Hyliard has been working hard meeting with faculty members, aiming to learn the ins and outs of Grosse Pointe South, a school that is completely new to him. Hyliard has worked in education for over 20 years working in Columbia Public Schools, Okemos Public Schools, and most recently Ann Arbor Public.
“I think South is extremely well organized and well ran, and the teachers are
phenomenal,” Hyliard said. “It’s overall a really positive place and I’m so excited to get comfortable with this kind of community.”
As the school year has started, Hyliard’s peers have found that he has a fresh perspective and a dedication to Grosse Pointe South’s community. Hyliard is hoping to not fill the role of a scary assistant principal, but be someone who students and staff will feel comfortable with.
“I’m approachable for anything and I’m a very laid back guy, and if talking means getting to know you, or for something in a serious matter, then that’s okay too,” Hyliard said. “I’m excited to be here and to see what South brings me in this new environment.”
