“They’re a good team. Our guys are ready,” Assistant Coach Joe Srebernak said. “It’s going to be a lot of trading the ball back and forth.”
The Blue Devils started on defense. Off the bat, the Bulldogs scored a field goal for three points with a powerful punt that sent the ball barrelling through the goalpost. Wide receiver Vincent Vachon ’25 scored the first touchdown of the game eight minutes into the first quarter. This victory was closely followed by a second, and South established a 14-3 lead.
“I think South is blowing it out of the water, doing better than we could have imagined,” Luna Agosta ’25 said. “They’re starting off the game very strong and the student section is coming out over the top.”
South scored three more times during the second quarter. At that point, Devil’s Den student advisor Meg Pierce expected a win.
“This is an amazing game to watch,” Pierce said. “I’m really proud of the team.”
Srebernak’s prediction came true during the final half of the game as the Blue Devils and the Bulldogs took turns pushing each other up and down the field. South’s strategy shifted away from an offensive-based one as the coaches screamed for defense from the sidelines. Romeo broke through the line twice, scoring each time, but nothing could topple the morale the audience had built up.
“We’re going to win,” Pierce said. “That is my prediction right now.”
South beat Romeo 34-16. As of Sept. 6, their overall score for the season is 2-0. They are ranked #28 in Detroit, #13 in Michigan division two and #55 in the state.
“It’s better than we could have hoped for,” Agosta said.
