On Thursday, May 2, the varsity girls’ lacrosse team faced off against hometown rival Grosse Pointe North in a high-tension game. Led by star goal-scorer Lyla Hampton ’26, South emerged victorious after a fast-paced game.
Starting off strong and setting the tone for the rest of the game, Hampton, assisted by Margaret Blake ’26, scored the game’s first goal six minutes into the first quarter. This was very quickly countered by the Norsemen when Josie Cueter ’25r scored only seven seconds later.
This back-and-forth battle continued strong throughout the first quarter, as North went on to score their second goal creating a short-lived lead over South. The Blue Devils immediately fought back, scoring a goal shortly before being issued a yellow card, giving North a penalty shot that was successfully blocked by goalie Cate Hampton ’24. The first quarter ended with a score of 5-4, South leading by one.
The Blue Devils came back more aggressive than ever during the second quarter. Only four minutes in, South received a penalty, forcing them to play down a player. Despite the odds against them, South still managed to score a goal while covering for their missing player. South began to break away from the close game and ended the second quarter leading by four.
Third quarter reaffirmed this lead as South scored four more times to North’s three goals, finishing the quarter with a score of 13-8. This energy moved forward into the final quarter where South scored an additional five goals and North only one, finishing the game with a final goal from Hampton and a score of 18-9.
“The highlights of the game were definitely that even though we were a man down during the second half we still managed to score eight goals,” defenseman Dempsey Ciconte ’26 said. “We really improved on our passing and ground balls.”
