This June, there will be a field hockey camp held for rising 8 to 12 graders. The camp will be held on Tuesday, June 18 to Thursday, June 20 from 10:30-noon at South’s field.
The camp costs $75 for all attendees, including a South field hockey t-shirt. Players will be expected to bring their own equipment, but will need no playing experience. Players will work on stick work and the basic skills needed to play the game. Zoe Schatko ‘26, a varsity player on South’s field hockey team, helps coach the camp.
“You learn how to play field hockey and the basic rules of the game,” Schatko said. “It’s really fun, you do a lot of stick work, and you can meet some of the players at South. They pretty much encourage you to join, encourage kids to grow the game play more, and teach them what field hockey is all about,” Schatko said.
The camp, coached by varsity Field Hockey Coach, Jesse Rouleau, will focus on scrimmages and gameplay, as well as stickhandling drills, shooting drills, and lots of skill work. Players will also do fun activities such as relays, running games, and teamwork skills, which Charlie Harr ‘26 explains.
“Players will work on skills for the upcoming season because not everyone plays all year,” Harr said. “You work as a team and get into the groove of playing again before the next season.”
For incoming freshmen, the camp is a great way to get to know your new teammates, learn the rules, and learn important information for the new season, which Elena Hubner ‘26 gives insight on.
“It’s a great way to get prepared and familiar with field hockey again before tryouts,” Hubner said. “It’s also to get to know your teammates more, especially coming into high school. It was really important to know more of the expectations and more about the sport.”
