Prior to southeast bands competing for a division one district title, a more local showcase must occur. At Pierce Middle School on Feb. 7, Brownell, Pierce, and South bands will conduct a mock competition to prepare them for the district performance.
Both the Brownell and Pierce concert bands will all practice their competition set in the Pierce Auditorium. Performing and getting judged by a different band teacher will prepare them for the real deal.
Wind Ensemble Alto Saxophone player Ella Johnson ‘24 enjoys the new perspective on the pieces that other music teachers offer.
“It’s nice to have (someone) who maybe notices things that you never noticed before about the music,” Johnson said.
Playing three different pieces of music and being tested on a sight-reading piece is sure to fill up the musicians’ plates. Being challenged by one of the pieces doesn’t stop Johnson from enjoying them.
“(Challenges) definitely affects my work ethic (in band),” Johnson ’24 said. “There’s a lot of parts that I’m really excited to play and that kind of makes up for the parts that kind of suck to play.”
