South Hockey is a sport that’s not only more competitive, but more interesting than it seems to most students, and the game against Brother Rice on Tuesday, Dec. 5 proved just that.
Both teams made their first appearances with warm up’s and the National Anthem, with everyone ready to get their fans excited. The game started with South taking control of the puck, but not much after, Brother Rice was able to take possession, and score the first goal of the game, giving them a lead start.
Two South players were then put in the penalty box, number four Hayden Crane, and number two Drew Brady, putting South at a disadvantage as Brother Rice again took control of the puck. Number five for Brother Rice, Drew Kowal, was soon put in the penalty box as well, evening the playing field, but South was still down one man.
With South down one player, Brother Rice was able to score their second goal of the game, keeping them in the lead. Even with this lead, South was able to start gaining an advantage, as another player from Brother Rice was in the penalty box. With a one-opponent loss, South was able to take control of the rink.
While watching the match on the ice, spectators were able to keep their spirits high with food, friends and upbeat music to keep the energy alive. Never was there a dull moment when watching, and the competitive spirit was kept through the whole match.
With the first quarter ending, Brother Rice was back in control as another South player had made it to the penalty box. The spirits and tensions were high, but soon enough, Brother Rice shot their third goal, ending the first quarter.
South was able to make their way back, but it was not enough to win the game, with the final score being 10-2.
