Winning has not had been a problem for girls varsity track as this season marks the eighth consecutive time girls track has gone undefeated. This momentum carried over into Regionals where South dominated with a 124 point differential.
With the history of this team, the runners have high goals and expectations. These goals help the girls become the best runners they can be, head coach Stephen Zaranek said .
“These expectations range from attendance to attitude to team unity to performance,” Zaranek said. “ The girls thrive in this positive environment.”
Going 7-0 takes a lot of talent but it has to be balanced in all events, Zaranek said. This includes relays, sprints, distance, hurdles, and field events which are all strong.
“We are extremely well balanced over all 17 events,” Zaranek said. “ We have strong people in each event and have scored equally over all areas”
Knowing the streak and legacy of their record was intimidating for the runners but it also brought them together, co-captain Elise Grever ‘15 said. Every player knew what they had to do and stepped up every meet.
“Knowing the legacy of our success was daunting but our girls stepped up and committed themselves to keep the streak alive,” Grever said . “The common goal of remaining undefeated brought the team together.”
It was not an easy road for track to go undefeated. In the last meet of the season they had to face a challenging Dakota team, Grever said. Both teams were undefeated at the time. With the meet coming to an end, South pulled points out of the last event and beat Dakota.
“It was a stressful meet because at the time we were both undefeated,” Grever said . “It was cold and miserable but we ended up winning by pulling points from the majority of the 17 events.”
With a great season under their belt the girls look to move forward and win the State championship, co-captain Megan Sklarski ’15 said. The team’s depth and strong runners across all events makes the team believe they have a shot.
“We all just hope to have our best performance and see where that takes us,” Sklarski said.
