South’s boys cross country team finished in 3rd out of 18 teams at their regional meet last Friday, qualifying for States this coming Saturday.
The boys times reflected off of their faces as they crossed the finish line, said Coach Mark Sonnenberg.
“All of our varsity runners were sub 17 minutes,” said varsity runner Charlie Warren.
Matt Geist ’13 finished first and 11th overall with an astonishing time of 16:25. Behind him only by five seconds, and three spots back was teammate Zack Montgomery ’13. The two were recognized at a ceremony shortly after for coming within the top 15 runners.
Not only did the Varsity boys do very well but the JV finished off their season with a great race, Sonnenberg said. Mike Aro ‘13, Bailey Labadie ‘13, and Mike Fennell ‘13 will be the varsity alternates at states next weekend, because of their performances at the Regional.
The boys finished off their season on a perfect note, Warren said. The great weather, the great races and the annual whip cream fight at the end of every Regional meet.
“We’re hoping to come in within top 15 at states,” said Warren. “And I think we can do it.”
The team is hoping to see many South supporters at State Finals next Saturday Nov. 3, at the Michigan International Speedway.
