Knocking off Port Huron Northern, the Men’s Varsity Tennis squad won the Macomb Area Red Conference Championship on Monday, Sept. 17.
“Port Huron is always a very good team, especially when we go up there because it’s very windy and they usually have a hostile crowd,” said Head Coach John Willard. “Our number two doubles pulled out a tough three set match to win it for us.”
The final score of the match was 5-3 in South’s favor.
Winning their matches, the second, third and fourth doubles teams, along with the first and fourth singles were victorious. Nick Palouchi ’15, number one singles, beat a highly ranked junior tennis player. Number four singles, Nick Costakis ’16, played very consistent tennis to win his match.
Victor Flynn ’14 and Patrick Dietz ’13, number two doubles, were in the match that won the championship for South against Port Huron Northern.
“For the team to be prepared, we had to take each match seriously and not focus on the team, but our own individual matches to contribute to the team’s success,” said Will Norris ’15, a Varsity Tennis player.
Willard said next on the Tennis’ team agenda is winning regionals, if they win that match they go on to the State Competition. Regionals will be held in two weeks on Oct. 11th at Elworthy park.
“Now our focus is doing well at Regionals, if we do well there, we could make states, which has been our goal all season,” said Flynn.
