Last night, Feb. 5, the boys basketball team defeated Fraser for the second time this season. The two teams met on Jan .14 at Fraser and South won then, 65-40. Last night the score was closer, as South defeated Fraser, 53-35.
“A win is a win. We didn’t play well tonight. Too many turnovers. We had no rhythm,” head coach Troy Glasser said. “They did a good job with their defensive schemes, and we had a hard time figuring it out.”
After trailing in the first quarter, South was able to score a few points, including a baseline layup from Brian Blanzy ‘15. Time expired and South had a 9-6 lead at the end of a low-scoring first quarter.
The Blue Devils were able to carry their momentum into the second quarter. Jack Maher ‘16 hit a three-pointer to score first, and Greg Harris ‘16 hit a lay-up on the following possession to score the first five points on the second quarter
Six points from Sam Blanzy 15 and four from Brennen Buszka ‘17 led South in the third quarter, as they were able to jump out to a 40-29 lead going into the fourth quarter. Fraser was able to string together a 6-0 run to make the score 40-35 early in the fourth quarter.
Although that would be the last of their scoring, as South finished the game on a 13-0 run and defeated Fraser 53-35.
Glasser said although the team didn’t play very well for most of the game, because they compete hard they were able to finish the game strong.
“We play hard, got some points, made some shots. We just play hard,” Glasser said.
Glasser said that the team needs to work on countering the zone defense. They have had a hard time reading it thus far, but South’s own defense was the reason they were able to win last night.
“Our confidence is rising because we have been playing solid as a team,” said Brian Blanzy ‘15. “Beating a team twice is expected.”
