Cornwall Bakery: Small Town Grosse Pointe

May 16, 2017

The rain pours on a cool afternoon while inside steam rises off the surface of a hot latte. The hustle and bustle of the busy bakery seems softened by the small town feel inside.

This is Cornwall Bakery in Grosse Pointe Park on Kercheval.

This little known bakery offers a new kind of Grosse Pointe. It offers the small town kind of feel that gets so often overlooked in the backyard of Detroit.

Breads line the back wall while inside glass cases there are rows of every baked good imaginable. Large tables span the inside of the restaurant and patio tables line the sidewalk outdoors, offering plenty of seating for after school hangouts.

In the summer, the glass garage door windows are opened and flowers are planted in the window boxes in front of the bakery. The bakery is open to the quiet side of Kercheval: the Park.

On the weekends, families can enjoy a quaint afternoon while their children enjoy the train tables. While during the week teens can spend their afternoons working on homework while eating sweets.

Cornwall offers everything from breakfast sandwiches to my personal favorites: cannolis and croissants. While some pastries like the shortbread cookies might be a little on the pricy side, most items, such as the slices of cake and soft pretzels, are very reasonable.  At any price, these treats are amazing!

Many people don’t realize that Cornwall offers a full line of made to order drinks including lattes and cappuccinos. My favorite – the iced vanilla latte – is a cool refresher on hot summer days. In my opinion, the iced latte is more rich than Starbucks’ and offers a creamier taste.

My go-to bakery items are the cannolis. The filling inside is creamy and rich with an authentic cannoli flavor. The shell is buttery and topped with powdered sugar which adds to the overall taste of the cannolis.

Although the prices may be a little steep, I think it’s worth it for an escape from a busy life to small town Grosse Pointe.
