Comerica Park Meets Pointe Singers

Kylie Capps ’14 | Staff Writer

Many families and friends gathered together on Saturday, Sept. 22 to support the Pointe Singers as they performed the national anthem at Comerica Park.

Choir Director Christopher Pratt said the group sang on national television at 4 p.m. before the Detroit Tigers played against the Minnesota Twins.

Terry Ayrault, father of Hannah Ayrault ’14, arranged for the choir to sing by calling the Tiger’s Promotions Department.

“Once I told them that South’s award-winning choir wished to sing the anthem at the game they seemed more than willing to give the kids a shot,” said Terry Ayrault in an e-mail.

Christina Koehler ’14 said she, along with many other singers, was excited to perform and as expected did very well.

“Make no mistake, our national anthem isn’t the easiest song to sing, but after seeing the choir perform so beautifully over the years, I knew that they would be able to handle it,” said Terry Ayrault.

Pratt said the game was sold out but the Pointe Singers were still able to buy standing-room-only tickets so they could stay and enjoy it. Parents were also given information on how to buy tickets so they could support their children as well as see the game.

“I knew my parents would be attending and I’m sure many others did as well,” said Maggie Bickerstaff ’13. “We are blessed enough to have parents who are eager to support both the Tigers and the arts.”

Bickerstaff said players from the Minnesota Twins were high-fiving the singers as they made their way onto the field.

“It was so cool to be so close to the baseball players and be able to see them in real life,” said Koehler.

Koehler said after their performance, a lot of people told them how well they did, adding she is really proud to be part of an organization that is so well known.

Ayrault said he believes South’s choir was able to present “The Star Spangled Banner” in a memorable and inspirational fashion.
