Looking to clinch a playoff berth with a win, the varsity football team will take the field Friday against L’Anse Creuse in its final home game of the season.

With a 5-2 record to date, the Blue Devils need just one more win to ensure a spot in the playoffs.  The team had an opportunity to achieve that goal last week, but faltered down the stretch en route to a 42-16 road loss to Port Huron.

The loss, however, opens the door for the possibility of wrapping up a playoff berth in front of the home fans on Homecoming.

“If you’ve played football, it always means something to win Homecoming,” said offensive line coach James Glovac. “It’s something you look forward to doing. You want to go to that Homecoming dance with a victory, not a loss.”

The Blue Devils will have to put last week’s loss behind them, though, if they are to avoid dropping their second straight game and putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy.

“I think that because we lost last week, during practice this week we’re going to work a lot harder,” said linebacker and tight end Andrew Barnett ’12. “We’re going to go a lot harder and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

It is also important that the team show it can take care of business when it needs to, Barnett said. A convincing win in such an important game would go a long way toward proving they are a good team.

“They’re 3-4 and they’re a good team and if they come inspired to play they could give us a rough game,” said Glovac. “So we have to be ready for them.”
