Ready to begin another year of creativity, South’s Lampworking Club is officially up and running, starting Sept. 19. Years ago, in the last few weeks of her advanced placement biology classes, club advisor Shelly Rothenbuhler brought the idea of this club to life.
“Lampworking Club starts early in the morning because the process can take some time to do,” Rothenbuhler said. “We use these glass tubes and blow torches to create glass beads that students can pick up at the end of the day.”
Originally a Neighborhood Club class she taught in her free time, Rothenbuhler’s passion for glasswork stemmed far outside of school, such as going to art fairs years ago and putting her own flowers and other glass pieces on display.
“When the kids asked me to make it a club, I told them to talk to Hamka and make sure they were allowed to use blowtorches in my classroom,” Rothenbuhler said. “When he said yes, we got it running.”
