Grosse Pointe Garden Society has caught the eyes of many as the show recently premiered on Hulu. This show is full of scandals and secrets, which in some way accurately reflects the reputation the community of Grosse Pointe has. Grosse Pointe Garden Society shows that connections can help you win to the top.
The first episode introduces four members of a suburban garden club in Grosse Pointe. The characters all face challenges in their private lives, but are all connected by a murder that happens further in the season. I liked how they kept foreshadowing the murder throughout the episode. It made it more interesting and caught the viewer’s attention which helped keep me more invested.
I think that the overall idea of the GPGS was pretty good, but throughout the first episode alone I found myself a little confused. I feel like there were too many storylines that kind of strayed away from the overall story. Throughout the episode, they showed many instances where power and connections got you further, no matter what was fair. This is kind of how Grosse Pointe is wired in a way. The more donations or connections you have, the more opportunities you have for success.
I liked how the characters had more variety. There were housewives and teachers and what seemed to be middle-class people just trying to get by. I thought it was interesting to see that they made each character have a story of their own to help build the background and show how this murder happened. Something I think was kinda exaggerated was how there were so many affairs during the first episode, I feel like that is how Grosse Pointe is viewed by many people when that is not the case. I was expecting there to be more similarities between the show and Grosse Pointe, so I was disappointed when there really weren’t. I feel like there were so many opportunities to do something really cool with the show and making it about a garden society might not draw a younger audience in and might give them the wrong impression.
As for the acting, I thought that it was a little cheesy and at some points a little awkward. But I would still watch anyway since the show is based on our town and the storyline is intriguing, to say the least.
