Steve Andre, a freelance photojournalist from Detroit, started teaching himself photography as a hobby in 2004. Although he works at a steel plant in Detroit, Andre took his serious talents elsewhere and traveled to Ukraine in 2010 to photograph the Chernobyl disaster.
“I just kind of fell in love with the country,” Andre said. “The more times I went back, I made more connections with more people and friendships.”
Aside from capturing moments in Ukraine, Andre helps a Chernobyl grandmother who lives there.
“I go back there and basically take care of her, help her in the fields and buy whatever she needs,” Andre said. “In return, she feeds me and gives me good memories.”
With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Andre is settled safely back in the United States, although he didn’t leave without trying to fight for a country he loves.
“I tried joining the Ukrainian military on multiple occasions, but it’s kind of a bureaucratic nightmare at this point,” Andre said. “Instead of going to bed and listening to the street traffic, you go to bed listening to air raid sirens and explosions.”
