On January 13, 2021, history was made. It was the first time in US history that a president had been impeached more than once. The House of Representatives chose to file an impeachment against the 45th president after he “non-purposely” encouraged the raiding of the capitol building on January 6.
A message from our former president addressed to citizens of right-handed beliefs, saw an opportunity to “win back their country.” The rioters took this message quite significantly, responding to it in a much more violent way than expected. “It’s not over,” the rioters chanted while storming the capitol.
After the attack, Trump was kept out of sight, and hidden in a desolate White House as the impeachment was playing out. He responded to his supporters as if they were children getting a toy taken away from them: very condescendingly. “I want to be very clear: I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week,” Trump’s statement from AP News. “No true supporter could ever endorse political violence.”
Ten Republicans, including the House’s Number three Republican, Liz Cheney of Wyoming, joined all Democrats to impeach Trump for “incitement of insurrection.” Her statement was very much supported and significant after she charged that Trump “summoned this mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack.”
President Biden issued a statement on the night of the attack, calling the assault on the Capitol “unlike anything we have witnessed in the 244-year history of our nation,” from CNN. He later went on about the need for the Senate to balance its constitutional duties with working together on urgent business matters like this.
Leading up to the inauguration, there were calls to actions from various citizen groups in support of a smooth transition of powers. Suffice to say there were hazards in going forth with the inauguration, for there were an abundance of safety precautions surrounding various buildings, thankfully the second impeachment of Donald Trump did not affect President elect Joe Biden’s day.
The impeachment of our former president evidently made us feel uncomfortable and uneasy because Trump gave us so many reasons to not trust the political system of our country. The unfortunate attack definitely took a toll on our country from a natonalist standpoint. The division between ourselves has become so severe and extensive, it’s almost hard to believe what our country has come to. Though this second impeachment happened towards the very end of Trump’s term, a fresh start for our country might just be the answer to our problems.
