New skateboarding club starts up

Amidst this unfamiliar school year, a group of Grosse Pointe South students have come together to create the Skateboard Club as a space for students to not only express their love for skating, but encourage new people to get into the skateboarding scene.
Supervised by economics teacher Bert Wilberger, this new club is a great opportunity for both experienced skaters and beginners, according to Aidan Kern ‘21.
“We haven’t had the chance to go to any parks as a group yet, but when we do, we will make sure there are ramps for every level,” Kern said.
According to Kern, the club meets on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. outside of South.
“Anyone is encouraged to come to a meeting regardless of experience,” Kern said. “Meetings aren’t mandatory, and it is a really laid-back environment”.
The group hopes to work out a COVID-19-safe way to have an in-person skate session soon, according to Kern.
“When it’s safe, we will meet up at nearby parks like Modern Skate and Surf and Riverside Park,” Kern said.
Kern added that the club is excited to have a place for all students who love skateboarding to bond.
“I think a lot of people got into skating during quarantine,” Kern said. “I’m excited to meet and skate with new people now that South finally has a skating club.”
