As the Christmas season is fast approaching many are wondering what cookies they should make or new cookies to try this year. Here are some of the most popular Christmas cookies in the US.
Number 1-Sugar cookies
Sugar cookies are some of the most beloved and prettiest cookies you can make with many varying shapes, sizes and decorations. They are very easy to bake and have a simple, sweet taste that is sure to satisfy your tastebuds. To make this particular type of sugar cookie you’ll need 2 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, ½ teaspoon of baking powder, 1 cup of softened butter, 1 ½ cup white sugar, 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. First, you need to preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Next in a small bowl combine flour, baking powder/soda then set aside for later. For the next step, you’ll need to cream together the butter and sugar in a large bowl until smooth, then add the egg and vanilla. Next, gradually add the dry ingredients from the small bowl and combine together. To bake, roll the dough into small balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet, then bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Final step remove the cookies from the sheet after around 2 minutes of cooling and enjoy or place them on a cooling rack to further cool the sugar cookies. This recipe makes around 36 cookies.
Number 2-Sunflower Butter Blossoms or Peanut Butter Blossoms
Both sunflower and peanut butter blossoms taste exactly the same although sunflower blossoms are a nut allergy-friendly substitute. This can be a big plus if you have a friend or family member who’s allergic, like myself. The flavor of these cookies is very rich with a chocolate and peanut butter taste, one that is comparable to a peanut butter cup flavor. To make these delicious cookies you’ll need 1 cup of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of brown sugar, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 cup of sunflower butter, 3 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, ½ teaspoon of salt and a bag of Hershey’s kisses. The first step is to preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Next combine the sugar, brown sugar, butter and eggs then cream until smooth. For the next step add the sunflower butter, flour, baking soda, and salt into the mixture, stir together until all the ingredients are combined together. To bake, roll the dough into small balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for around 10 minutes or until done. Right after you take the cookies out of the oven press the kisses into the cookie to create the blossom then place on a cooling rack after around two minutes of rest. This recipe makes around 4 dozen cookies.
Number 3-Christmas Snickerdoodle Cookies
These are very simple and easy to make cookies like most on this list. You can decorate with a red and green top to give it that Christmas vibe or a light frosting if the cookie needs some moisture, make sure you don’t cover up the flavor with the frosting as it is a more subtle cookie than others. To make the cinnamon-sugar mixture to roll the cookies in you’ll need 1 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon sugar. The only step needed to make the cinnamon sugar mixture is to combine both into a small bowl then set aside for later a step in the cookie making process. To make these cookies you’ll need 1 ½ cups of sugar, ½ cups shortening, ½ butter, 2 eggs, 2 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoons of cream of tartar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and ¼ teaspoon salt. When previous ingredients are combined add in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Next roll dough into small balls, in the cinnamon-sugar mixture then place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes. For the final step take cookies out and cool on sheet for 1 minute then transfer to a cooling rack
Number 4-Candy Cane Cookies
Although a harder cookie to bake it is well worth it with its appealing design and its fresh peppermint flavor. This is a cookie you should definitely try this holiday season. To make this cookie you’ll need 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of softened butter, ½ cup of milk, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract, 1 egg, 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda ¼ salt, ½ red food coloring, 2 teaspoons of finely crushed candy canes, 2 teaspoons of sugar. First preheat the oven to 375 degrees F, then stir together 1 cup of sugar, butter, milk, vanilla, peppermint extract, and the egg in a large bowl. Next stir in the flour, baking soda, and salt, divide the dough in half and add food coloring into one half of the dough. Next cover both halves and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. While you wait for the 4 hours to be up you need to make the topping for the cookies. Stir together the finely crushed candy canes and 2 teaspoons of sugar then set aside. After the 4 hours have passed, roll the red and regular dough into a long, skinnier rope then cut into 4-inch pieces. The cook time may vary depending on the thickness of the rope. Next place the two rolls side by side on an ungreased cookie sheet and twist together until you have a candy cane-like appearance. Bake for 9-12 minutes or until very lightly brown. Right after you take the cookies out, sprinkle your candy cane-sugar mixture on top. Let the cookies cool on the sheet for 2 minutes then place on a cooling rack.
