Winter sports have started. Tryouts were being held last week to gather the newest teammates for the hockey season. According to Grosse Pointe South’s girls hockey coach, Hailee Craig, the season will be different due to coronavirus.
“The season is going to be different this year because of Corona,” Craig said. “The players don’t have access to locker rooms and have to wear a mask while staying distanced on the ice.”
Craig explains how although the season will be different with the exception of face coverings, the team won’t let the coverings affect the game of hockey itself.
“Depending on the rinks we go to, the rules will be different,” Craig said. “The team will just have to adjust and get used to the change.”
Senior hockey player on the girls team, Regan Sherry ‘21, explains her thoughts on going into the new season with corona.
“I think going into the season we’re off to a great start,” Sherry said. “We had a bunch of girls try out this year and once we grow as a team we will be ready for our first game coming up against St. Catherines.”
According to Sherry, she is concerned about coronavirus and people not being as cautious as they should.
“I’m afraid that people aren’t going to be as covid cautious as they should and it makes me sad because if someone tests positive on the team then we will be shut down for two weeks,” Sherry said.
Boys hockey player Jake Spitz ‘22 expresses similar concerns.
“We just had tryouts, but I am worried that the season may not even happen,” Spitz said.
Although Covid-19 will change the season, Spitz and Sherry still express their excitement for the season to start.
“I am really excited to finally play in a game because the last game we played was in March right before we got shut down,” Spitz said.
According to Craig, last year the girls hockey team played in the semi-finals against Liggett High school right before the season ended. South’s girls hockey team won against Liggett in overtime with the score 3-2. Sherry expresses how hopefully this season they can finish off the season where they ended last season hopefully making it to the State finals.
“My goals this year are to be the best player I can be along with taking first place at the State championship,” Sherry said.
